Joe Ruhl

Heritage 206

9:00 AM - 9:45 AM

Some have feared that human interactions and relationships in the classroom might suffer with the use of technology. After all, the argument goes, have you ever seen a group of people in a restaurant where no conversation is occurring because each one is fixated on his/her cell phone? Let’s put those fears to rest! I have learned how using technology can actually enrich human relationships in the classroom, and I’d love to share some stories with you!

Breakout 1: Course Design with the Brain in Mind

Ginger Howell Ph.D.

Heritage 209

10:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Course design plays a huge role in the success of a course. In fact, designers and instructors claim that course design greatly impacts the success or failure of the course with regard to student understanding and student experience. In this session, we will examine how the design of activities can impact students’ knowledge construction and how course structure both affects the brain’s ability to organize information and impacts the emotional experience. Join this session to see practical examples of how to create course design with the brain in mind!

10:35 AM

Breakout 2: Alignment: What is it and how it works

Eddie Supratman, ASU Beebe
Stephanie Ungerank

Heritage 210

10:35 AM - 11:05 AM

This session offers some practical tips for constructive alignment in course design via linking teaching and learning activities/assignments to course learning objectives, and ultimately to course learning outcomes. Do your students feel "stuck" in busy work? Can you explain to your students why they are completing a learning activity? We will dive into the importance of design, teaching and interaction, as well as tips for creating measurable and consistent objectives.

Keynote 2: Student Choice (What Can Student-Directed Learning Look Like?)

Joe Ruhl

Heritage 206

3:00 PM - 3:45 PM

Moving from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered classroom creates a “teacher paradox,” because on the surface, the teacher appears to become the least important person in the classroom. But in transitioning from a “sage on the stage” to a “guide on the side” (while team teaching with a fleet of classroom computers), the teacher’s impact on the lives of the students is actually enhanced. How does one design units of instruction that are student-centered? Come and find out how one high school teacher has attempted to pull this off.
