The Forgotten Man did a lot to alter my perceptions regarding the political and economic causes of the Great Depression. She makes a pretty compelling case that, rather than helping, the interventionism of the Roosevelt Administration actually exacerbated the Depression and caused it to linger on and on in America long after its effects had abated in other parts of the world.

Additionally, Shlaes puts a human face on the cost of expanded government intervention by relating the stories of how individual Americans were pressed underneath the gears of the NRA. I found the story of the Schechter brothers—neighborhood kosher butchers to be especially engaging.
