Comments by Whitney Hammes about the book:
There are few things more exciting than discovering a new author or series of books just waiting to be explored. This summer I read my first P. G. Wodehouse novel, Love Among the Chickens, and was surprised to find that he had published around 99 novels. Wodehouse is most famous for his characters Jeeves and Wooster, and I have long enjoyed the BBC adaptation of those stories, starring Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. But as for reading Wodehouse, Love Among the Chickens, is the first novel of his that I completed, and now I’m hooked! This novel was first published in 1905, then re-worked and republished in 1920. It tells the tale of some hapless gents who decide that raising chickens will be a surefire “money for nothing” endeavor. The cast of characters includes an outrageous entrepreneur, his long-suffering writer friend, a grouchy professor and his beautiful daughter, plenty of opinionated villagers, and one irascible chicken named “Aunt Elizabeth.” Wodehouse continues to charm readers even a hundred years on, and I have found Love Among the Chickens to be an accessible introduction to his style as well as a delightful summer read. Recommended for all Anglophiles and backyard chicken enthusiasts.
