Israel, Jerusalem Mandelbaum Gate Shortly after the 6-Day War, the then Mayor of Jerusalem had the Mandelbaum House demolished (probably illegally) because it had become a symbol of the formerly divided city. He was completely unaware that it had been built by an affluent Jewish merchant in 1927.
