John Allen Chalk: Personal Correspondence

Spanning John Allen Chalk’s life from 1954 to 1971, the collection begins with his ministry at the Broad Street Church of Christ in Cookeville, Tennessee, continues through his tenure at the Herald of Truth radio program, and ends with his decision to attend law school at the University of Texas.  Ranging from perfunctory business transactions to the deepest of confessions, the letters highlight a time in Chalk’s life that proved both rewarding and exhausting.  Of special interest are his dedication to the civil rights movement and tremendous influence in the Churches of Christ and Christian higher education in particular, as evidenced by correspondence with B.C. Goodpasture, Jim Bill McInteer, Willard Collins, and W.A. Bradfield, among others. This collection was made possible through a generous gift in memory of Corinne Graham. Additional support was provided by John Allen Chalk and the friends of the Meredith Restoration History Archive. We are  grateful for those who skillfully indexed, organized, and scanned the documents, particularly John Coffey, Shelby Griffith, and Ananias Moses.
