The 96th annual Harding Bible Lectureship is scheduled for Sunday, September 29 through Wednesday, October 2, 2019. The theme is “FAN THE FLAME: Renewed By The Power of the Holy Spirit.” It is a study of the book of Acts, and especially of the first six chapters. In a time when many are concerned about the future of faith in America we believe it would be useful to go back to the beginning, to the dynamic Jerusalem church, to rediscover the characteristics of a Spirit-filled church.

When the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at his baptism, the Spirit came in the form of a dove (Matthew 3:16). When the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, He came with fire (Acts 2). Why fire?

Perhaps it suggests the light of truth, as the Spirit inspired the apostles (John 16:13). It certainly reflects the dramatic story of the gospel recorded in Acts, as it spread like a wildfire outward from Jerusalem and throughout the ancient world. Most likely, however, the fire symbolizes the power that Jesus had promised would accompany the arrival of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8). It is our prayer that this study of Acts will “fan the flame” (2 Timothy 1:6) of the Holy Spirit’s power at work in us (Ephesians 3:20-21); that our souls may be refreshed, our churches renewed, and our faith in the power of the gospel reinforced.
