About the Author

Cathy Acre, Ed.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, is Program Director and Associate Professor in the Occupational Therapy Program at Harding University. She has more than 35 years of experience in occupational therapy education and clinical practice, with experience in program development, curriculum design, accreditation, and student mentoring. Dr. Acre has taught across multiple areas of occupational therapy and has a particular interest in preparing students for the changing demands of contemporary practice. As an educator and program director, she continues to explore new approaches to teaching and learning alongside her faculty and students.

Progress Over Perfection: Building a Dynamic Program

Through Intentional Design and Collaboration Innovation in teaching extends beyond adopting new technology it requires intentional curriculum design, collaboration, reflection, and a willingness to continually learn and improve. In this interactive faculty panel, members of Harding University's Occupational Therapy Program will share our experiences developing a new professional program while, for many of us, also growing as educators. Rather than presenting a finished product, we will discuss the ongoing process of discovering what has worked, what has challenged us, and how our teaching continues to evolve. Through candid conversations about successes, setbacks, and lessons learned, we will explore strategies for creating engaging learning experiences, integrating technology with purpose, connecting theory to practice, and preparing students for professional success. We will also reflect on how faculty collaboration, curriculum review, and student feedback have strengthened both our program and our growth as educators. Participants will leave with practical ideas and encouragement to view innovation as a process of continuous learning rather than the pursuit of perfection.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify strategies that promote student engagement through intentional curriculum design and purposeful use of instructional technology.
  2. Describe how faculty collaboration, reflection, and continuous improvement contribute to curriculum development and student learning.
  3. Apply one idea from the panel to enhance teaching, learning, or curriculum within their own educational setting.
