Abstract
A brief overview of the history of art education in the U.S., from the mid-twentieth century to the present, including positive and negative attributes, with the purpose of informing teachers regarding curriculum approaches to draw from as they design their own curriculum. The presentation includes information from Lowenfeld’s “Creative and Mental Growth”; the Behavioral movement of the early 1970’s; DBAE with information drawn from the Getty Foundation Publications along with information from states that adopted DBAE (Prairie Vision; “Beyond Creating: The Place for Art in America’s Schools” ; The Role of Discipline-Based Art Education in America’s Schools by Elliot W. Eisner); Visual Culture (Rescuing Art from ‘Visual Culture Studies by Michelle Marder Kamhi)); and Social Justice (Social Justice in Art Education: Fostering the Capabilities of Individuals and Enhancing Collective Solidarities by Cindy Maguire and Terry Lenihan).
