This book review discusses The File, by Timothy Garton Ash and the role informers played in East Berlin during the Cold War. It examines personal motivations for becoming informers and the justification that individuals used. In addition, this review weighs the value of The File as a primary source about the Cold War.

About the Author

Hailing from Salem, Oregon, Makyra Williamson is a junior at Harding University, where she is majoring in English and minoring in History and Bible. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, Phi Alpha Theta, and Chi Omega Pi, a women’s social club. After graduation, Makyra plans to pursue a career in substantive editing.
