About This Journal

Tenor of Our Times is a journal of student historical work jointly produced by the Eta Phi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and the History and Political Science department of Harding University. Tenor represents the best scholarship by our undergraduate students and can be on any historical topic. Submissions are accepted until the end of January, and the journal is published in late April. Inquiries should be sent to tenortimes@harding.edu.

After the National Biennial Phi Alpha Theta Conference in January 2012, our chapter came home energized, and the first volume of Tenor was published in Spring of that year with the help of Dr. Julie E. Harris, the faculty advisor for both Tenor and Phi Alpha Theta. Since that time, our student staff has increased from 3 to 5, and is now supported by a faculty editorial board drawn from across the globe and a student reviewer board of 6 to 8 students from all undergraduate classes.

The journal has won numerous awards since becoming annual participants in the Phi Alpha Theta Nash Journal Competition. Awards include third in 2015, first in 2016 and 2017 in both the print and online categories, and first in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 in the online category. Funds from the Nash Award are used to help expand and print the journal the following year. Our readership continues to grow, and we appreciate your support and interest in Tenor and in history.
