Abstract

During the French Wars of Religion, both Huguenots and Catholics developed different models of resistance theory, as a response to the political and social crises that had been plaguing France. As a result of this, the theory, practice, and perception of French kingship, was greatly challenged and transformed, as both religious factions expressed their anxieties by calling for resistance against the monarch. Their conclusions, although often antithetical, draw upon a shared metaphor of the body, as a representation of the body politic. Their shared usage of this metaphor, was accompanied by a shared desire to see resistance against a tyrannical ruler legitimized, by usage of the Estates General, presenting an early call for constitutionalism.
